24 valve Cummins P7100 Pump Conversion

A 24-valve P-pump conversion for a Cummins engine, specifically the 5.9L 24-valve found in 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram trucks, involves replacing the stock VP44 electronic injection pump with a P7100 mechanical pump. This conversion is popular for its increased reliability and potential for higher horsepower and torque. The process requires significant engine work, including removing the front cover, camshaft, and potentially the radiator and other components to access the gear housing.

Why we do the conversion:
The VP44 pump, while offering some advantages, is known for potential failure and limitations in high-performance applications. The P7100 offers greater reliability and is favored by many for its robust design and tunability.

What we need:
A comprehensive conversion kit typically includes:
P7100 injection pump (often a Dodge/Cummins sourced pump or Cummins OEM pump)
Gear housing and gasket
Front cover, gasket and oil seal
Pump drive gear
Pump bracket and brace
Timing plug
Throttle linkage kit
Cam sensor adapter
Fuel lines (mild steel or stainless steel)
Injector lines
Injectors (consider upgrading for increased performance)
Shut-off solenoid
Optional: BANKS tunnel Ram intake, PDD adjustable timing gear etc.

The installation:
Requires significant disassembly of the engine front end, including removing the camshaft.
May involve removing the radiator, intercooler, and other components for access.
Requires careful attention to detail and proper torque specifications.
The P7100 pump needs to be timed correctly to the engine.

The 24-Valve ECM Remains
Another item of retention during a P-pump swap is the engine control module (ECM). While it’s no longer required for throttle position, the 24-valve engine’s ECM has to be retained in order for the factory gauges within the cluster and various temperature and pressure gauges to function properly in a ’98.5-’02 Dodge Ram. However, the ECM can be relocated to virtually any spot under the hood. This means it can be mounted independently from the engine, where the constant vibrations produced by the rugged 5.9L Cummins will no longer directly contribute to the ECM’s demise. It’s important to note that with the ECM no longer communicating with the VP44, a permanent check engine light will be present on the dash. Many DIY’ers simply remove the bulb from the gauge cluster while others choose to live with it.

Performance:
The P7100 pump allows for greater fuel delivery and adjustability compared to the VP44.
Aftermarket kits can be tailored to specific power goals, with options for different horsepower levels.
Some kits are designed to work with factory turbochargers, while others are for more heavily modified setups.

24-valve P-pump conversion is a major undertaking that requires careful planning, the right parts, and a good understanding of the engine. While it can significantly improve the reliability and performance of the engine, it is not a simple swap.
At GLABE we supply complete conversion kits from 300hp to 550hp with very fair price, all parts meet Cummins OEM standard, and some parts machined in house come with better quality and performance.
